Secondhand smoke associated to behavioral problems in kids
Passive smoking is the inhalation of tobacco smoke as mainstream emitted from tobacco smoked
exhaled by smokers and as sidestream smoke from burning tobacco products. Together mainstream
smoke and sidestream smoke are also called "secondhand smoke" or environmental tobacco smoke.
It is estimated that one-half of all adults and children in the United States are exposed to
secondhand smoke.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently published its analysis of evidence for the
adverse respiratory health impacts of secondhand smoking, and has classified environmental smoke
as a Group A carcinogen (considered proven to cause cancer in humans).
A recent study has concluded that exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke, even at extremely low
levels, is linked with behavior problems in children and pre-teens. But the greater the exposure
to tobacco smoke, the greater the problems these kids and pre-teens had.
To find out how to protect yourself and your children from environmental smoke exposure, to quit
smoking or assist in smoke cessation, contact your local American Lung Association
