A Virus Can Trigger Prostate Cancer

Recent researches at Cleveland Clinic have linked the prostate cancer development with the presence of a newly identified virus called XMRAV.

viral chronic inflammation trigger According to study conclusion, presented Friday 24 February in San Francisco at the 2006 Prostate Cancer Symposium, the XMRV was identified as an infectious agent in humans, as well as closely related to a virus that causes leukemia in mice. This could be the first time researches produce an evidence that a virus is linked to prostate cancer development.

The study conclusions suggest that XMRV virus could be transmitted trough sexual way. Then it is possible that XMRV to generate a viral infection leading to chronic inflammation of this male gland. In a very similar way the human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause the same cervical disease, this XMRV chronic inflammation could result in prostate cancer.

The research team claims that more research is needed to confirm the conclusions. If prostate cancer is caused by a virus, the good news is its viral action can be removed by using special targeted vaccine or drugs. On the other hand, the use of condom could prevent XMRV sexual transmission.
