Cholesterol supports progression of prostate cancer
A team led by Michael Freeman, PhD, Program Director of the Urological Diseases Research Center at Children's, concluded that
high level of cholesterol in the blood may accelerate the growth of prostate tumors. According to this study cholesterol supports the
survival of cancerous tumors.
Making experiments on mice, the researchers noticed that excess of cholesterol caused by fat food accumulated in tumor cells.
The conclusion of study ask people to be aware of links between fat Western diets, high cholesterol level and high risk
of prostate cancer. For instance men in China and Japan have a low rate of prostate cancer, but the incidence rises in Chinese and Japanese
male population living to the United States.
The researchers also present evidence that cholesterol-lowering drugs used in cardiovascular disease, may inhibit cancer growth.
"Our study opens up a new paradigm in thinking about how cancer might be controlled pharmacologically by manipulating cholesterol" said Dr Freemen.
