UK statistics
- Between 1995 and 2003, the prevalence of obesity among UK children aged 2 to 10 rose from 9.9% to 13.7%.
- The percentage of children aged 2 to 10 who were overweight (including those who were obese) rose from 22.7% in 1995 to 27.7% in 2003.
French statistics
- Obesity in women rose from 8 percent in 1997 to 11.3 percent in 2003, an increase of over 40 percent.
- For men it was about the same, from 8.4 percent to 11.4 percent
- About a fifth of children (aged 7-11) are fat
Obesity risks
- Obesity in youth is the major health care challenge for the 21st century
- Obesity is a risk factor for many serious illnesses including heart disease, hypertension, stroke, respiratory disease, arthritis, and certain types of cancer
- Obese individuals have a 50-100% increased risk of death from all causes, compared with normal-weight individuals
- The prevalence of hypertension in obese adults is 41.9% for men and 37.8% for women.
- Obese children and adolescents are reported to be 12.6 times more likely than non-obese to have high fasting blood insulin levels, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
- A study published online by the BMJ finds that obesity in middle age increases the risk of dementia in later life.
