Recently, a research team at the Boston University Medical School found that a small genetic change in DNA
region is the cause of obese propensity. The incriminated gene, known as INSIG2, has an important role in
fat production and makes a person more prone to be overweight by simply changing its normal G-condition into
C-condition (the DNA code is made up of four letters).
That means blaming someone for its obesity is a bit like blaming someone for being short.
I personally think the research team is right, but there is a hidden danger in this approach if we all just
accept the fact that we haven't any control over our weight. The consequence should be something like that:
"don't bother trying to loose your fat because it is genetic anyways". Accepting irreversible role of genetic
is like accepting obesity and obesity related disease as the normal situation.
The truth is that nobody becomes obese while the amount of food calories is burned by its body during physical
and intellectual activity. I know, some people are genetically prone to be thin. For this kind of lucky people
staying thin is much easier than people who have a genetic propensity for obesity. That doesn't mean that
you cannot be thin with a genetic propensity for obesity, only that you have to try harder.
