Causes for obesity in children
Along with the increase of obesity in adult, childhood obesity is on the rise.
A recent reaserch study conducted at the University of Glasgow involving records of
7,000 children across Britain revelead about 20 causes for obesity in children.
According to Dr. Harvey Fineberg, President of the Institute of Medicine, in the United States childhood obesity is an epidemic. It is a crisis. It is a severe
threat to health. This is not a myth, and it is not something that can be ignored. The numbers
tell the story, and the risks are real.
Over the past 30 years, the childhood obesity rate has either doubled or tripled for American
children and adolescents. About 9 million American children today over age 6 are considered obese.
Being obese, can have a negative psychological impact on children. In addition obesity often
has a serious impact on a child's physical health. Childhood obesity increases the lifetime risk
of type 2 diabetes, and it increases the chance of having elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides,
insulin, and blood pressure -- all risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Here it is a partial list of obesity causes in children mentioned by scientists
- TV was was found to be a definite factor in future obesity.
Toddlers spending more than four hours a week and pre-school children watching more than
11 hours have a double the risk of becoming obese by the age of seven
- Spending too much time in the car
- Lack of sleep
- Being a lone child increased the risk of obesity despite of facct doctors haven't yet an explanation.
- Having mothers who smoked during pregnancy,
- Having obese parents (at least one of them),
- Formula feeding,
- Early weaning on to solid food,
- Eigh birth-weight,
- High weight in infancy,
- Excessive weight gain in infancy
- Premature weight "rebound"
As you can see many of them are in close connection with lifestyle and especially with lock of exercise.
For today's children digital generation the most important role of parents is to emphasize
the importance of physical activity and healthy eating. They can create healthy environments for
their children by doing regular physical activities, such as biking, swimming, or walking together
Action will be needed by food surveyors, manufacturers, and restaurants, and by city designers so that
people can get the exercise they need.
