English project to fight against obese condition in children
In this health challenge to cancel the obesity tendency to become epidemic, researces at the University of the West of England
will develope during 2005 year a poject focusing to identify the barriers to children outdoor play. the project is being funded by £51,000
from Designing for the 21st Century.
As one of biggest public health concern in the 21st Century is continous growing obesity in children, the team objective is to focus the
developing of outdoor spaces in order to encourage physical activity and regular play of youngest population.
Reports on 2002 level of childhood obesity show that in the uk it had risen to about one in fifteen girls (7.2%) and one in 20 boys (5.5%).
Professor Lamine Mahdjoubi, from UWE's faculty of the built environment, is one team co-ordinators. The team gathers a large variety
of professionals, including architects, landscape designers, traffic engineers, child psychologists and community safety experts.
Here it is wat Professor Mahdjoubi said:
"It is crucial to identify the barriers to outdoor play and to find effective ways of surmounting these barriers."
Aiming to explore the potential of creative design in outdoor public spaces special destinated for children, the team will conduct questionaires
and hold workshops.
The team will also take into consideration
- differences in the activity needs of boys and girls
- placing of play spaces near to other amenities
- developing safe outdoor spaces without problems related to transport issues, violence and impact of crime.
