What causes obesity?
People gain weight when the body takes in more calories than it burns off. Those extra calories are stored as fat.
The amount of weight gain that leads to obesity isn't a result of a few days, weeks or months acumulation. It's a
problem of habits lasting for a long time.
There are four important causes to be cited for obesity.
- Lifestyle
Part of people eat more than they can burn during the daily activity. This happens due of lack of education or bad habits
(overeating, irregular meals, etc).
Part of people cannot burn off calories they eat due a sedentary style. If the people in Europe had grown up in China with hard daily work in the
rice fields, only a few of them would be overweight or fat.
- Quality of food
Some people eat a small amount of food but plenty of fat and calories, excess of pre-packaged food is a good example.
They do not realize that human body needs more vitamins than calories. A healthier food must include fruits and vegetables
instead of fat and slow digerable preparates.
- Heredity and diseases
Some people burn calories slower than others do because of their genes.
Obesity can run in families. Many families eat fat foods or have the bad habits like
snacking in front of the TV or urging children to eat so they can grow "big and strong".
All of these situations can contribute to weight gain.
In most cases, weight problems arise from a combination of habits and genetic factors, as
it can be difficult to picture out if a person is born with a tendency to be obese or learns eating habits in the family.
- Stress and emotions
People tend to eat more when they are upset, anxious, sad, stressed out, or even bored.
