Peritoneal mesothelioma
A rarer type of mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma. This is where the cancer affects the abdomen and stomach.
In fact, peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer tumor of the membrane called peritoneum, a thin membrane in the
organs in the abdomen consisting of mesothelial cells. This form of cancer starts in the abdominal area,
but later it may spread to other parts of the body.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is associated to previous exposure to asbestos dust and fibers. About 20% of all
mesothelioma cases are peritoneal form, and they can be of two types: malignant and benign, but malignant mostly.
Peritoneal mesothelioma has a long latency time period. It can stay dormant in your body for many years. In many
cases it is accidentally found through routine abdominal xrays and CT scans showing something different than normal.
The cancer tumors developed initially in abdominal area increase the pressure on the abdomen causing symptoms such as
abdominal pain, vomiting, abdominal swelling or loss of appetite. In many cases symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma
include nausea, breathing problems, chest pain, bowel obstruction, anemia, fever or even blood clotting abnormalities.
The symptoms become more severe over time requiring a medical attention. If not they may lead to bowel obstruction
and distention.
There are many treatments for peritoneal mesothelioma: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery. However a
cure has yet to be found. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, go and ask to be checked out.
The earlier the diagnosis, the better chance.
