What causes impotence?
To understand the causes of impotence is better to understand the mechanism of erection.
An erection results when blood is pumped into the penis - and stays there - making it stiff and hard.
It is a complex process, involving:
- the blood vessels to and within the penis,
- the nervous system that controls the flow of blood and,
- the man’s emotional state.
The conclusion is that an erection happens when our physical, psychological and emotional conditions work alltogether.
When one of them are in deficiency the erectile process does not complete, and by consequence, there are 3 sorts of
influences that can stop erections from occurring.
1. Emotional causes
- Problems in relationship;
- Recent loss of a loved one or other bereavment;
- Hang-ups - like guilt about sex, fear about sex, etc.
2. Psychological causes
- Anxiety about 'sex performance';
- Depression;
- Tiredness;
- Stress;
- Unresolved gay feelings.
3. Physical causes
- Deficiencies of chemical mechanism that makes erections happen - very common in older men.
- Vascular (blood vessel) disorders. Arteriosclerosis, other heart or vascular diseases, high blood pressure are great risks of developing impotence.
- Diabetes is a leading cause of erection difficulties.
- Major surgery, eg prostate surgery or other abdominal operations.
- Side effects of some blood pressure (BP) treatments, some antidepressants and some ulcer healing drugs.
- Side effects of some radiation treatments.
- Neurological disorders, such as spinal cord injuries or multiple sclerosis.
- Liver failure.
- Hardening of the arteries.
- Smoking, by the risk of developing arteriosclerosis.
- Alcoholism
- Side effects of non-prescribed drugs like cocaine and others.
- Nervous system diseases - uncommon.
- Hormonal abnormalities - rare.
- Excessive drainage of blood from the penis through the veins (venous leak) – uncommon.
In most cases, physical causes of impotence - erectile dysfunction - reduce or prevent blood flow or nerve impulses to the penis.
