Self care in Diabetes
Currently, there is no way to prevent or treat diabetes.
If your diabetes is extremely hard to control and starts to jeopardize your health, a pancreas transplant may be in order.
This solution is only recommended for people who have life-threatening problems associated with diabetes.
Although diabetes cannot be cured, you can have a long and happy life. The answer to problems caused by diabetes
is in your lifestyle. Basicly:
- Follow a healthful eating plan.
- Get plenty of exercise, but be careful to avoid blood sugar pitfalls.
- Monitor your blood sugar and ketones.
1. Follow a careful diet
The goals of your diet must be blood sugar control, cholesterol/lipid levels, control of blood pressure,
as well an adequate nutrition for maintaining a reasonable weight.
- 50% to 60% of your daily calories must come from carbohydrates, and no more than 30% from fat.
- Eat at regular intervals to prevent hypoglycemia and help maintain blood sugar level in safe limits.
- Limit your salt intake if you have high blood pressure.
- Cut down on portions and restrict total of calories if you are overweight. Consistent calorie restriction
of 300-500 calories daily will result in gradual weight loss.
2. Check your feet for sores and avoid foot infections.
If you have diabetes, you are aptitude to nerve damage and poor circulation.
Because of this nerve dysfunction you may loose corresponding sensation, and by consequence you may not notice foot pain.
In this situation repeated trauma can cause damages of the skin on your foot. Furthermore, poor circulation will
hinder healing, and unnoticed sores can become infected and ulcerated. If left without cure, the tissue
on your foot will die and have to be removed.
3. Get your eyes checked yearly.
Poor blood circulation can damage your retinas and lead to blurry vision or a complicate retinopathy (blindness). Get your eyes
checked by an ophthalmologist at least one time per year.
4. Monitor your blood sugar.
This is an essential part of diabetes self-care because you can detect changes in the blood glucose levels.
Is better to keep some records in order to make a better corelation between your blood glucose levels and
external factors like diet, activity, stress, illnesses, and medications. Prevent illness condition to avoid
medication. Get an annual flu and pneumonia vaccine.
5. Be active and maintain an exercise regimen.
Doing exercise, your body uses energy stored in glucose circulating in the blood. Therefore exercise is an important
part of diabetes treatment because it lowers blood sugar.
6. Remove bad habits
- Lose weight if you are overweight.
- If you smoke, quit.
- Drink alcohol only in moderation.
