A big hope to prevent Type 1 diabetes
A research team from University of Maryland School of Medicine say that recently (end of February 2005) has discovered that human protein zonulin
controls the closing and opening of specialized elements that acts as gated between cells. This way zonulin can regulate the permeability of intestines. When
the quantity of zonulin produced by human body is too much, the gates are opened for too long and undigested food as well as toxins and bacterial particles
have free access to immune system.
As a self defense the production of antibodies is started. Dr Alessio Fasano, the team leader, discovered that antibodies can damage the islet cells in the pancreas
in charge with insulin producing task. For people genetically predisposed to Type 1 diabetes developing excess of zonulin leads to disease. According to Dr Fasano report patients with autoimmune disorders such as diabetes, multipe sclerosis, celiac disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
The research team report estimates that by controlling zonulin is possible to prevent Type 1 diabetes.
