Symlin - New innovative diabetes drug approved by FDA
The newest Amylin Pharmaceuticals drug - Symlin - was approved on 16 March 2005
by the U.S. Foods and Drugs Administration. Acording to this agency statement, Symlin is the only approved drug
for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, since insulin was introduced long time agho (in 1922).
This new drug is a synthetic lab replica of the hormone amylin. This hormone is naturaly occuring in human body,
helping regulate blood glucose levels. Symlin has the same influence on blood cells ans was approved to be used
in conjunction with older insulin. This way diadetics will manage their blood sugar within three hours from eating time.
According to the product information, Symlin should only be used in patients who:
- use their insulin as prescribed, but still need better blood glucose control;
- will follow their doctor's instructions exactly;
- will follow up with their doctor often;
- will test their blood glucose levels before and after every meal and at bedtime;
- understand how to adjust Symlin and insulin doses.
As a primary risk for patients, the FDA mentioned hypoglicemia, a situation when blood sugar goes down to low to
supply the body's normal activities. The FDA recommended only medical prescribed use of the drug and only to be used
by patients taking insulin but in need to better blood sugar monitoring.
The agency also said that this new drug was tested and evaluated in many studies involving about 5,000 people, but
it was not evaluated yet in diabetics younger than 18 age.
