Exubera inhaler adult diabetic patients regulate blood sugar insulin An inhaler that could almost instantly regulate the sugar level in blood has been approved on January 2006 by the US Food and Drug Administration. It have been tested and evaluated in approximately 2,500 adult suffering people having type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Targeting adult diabetic patients, this is the first new delivery system for insulin since it was developed some 80 years ago. Named Exubera, it is a dry powder human insulin that must inhaled through the mouth before eating.

The inhaler is rapid-acting, the powder penetrates rapidly into the bloodstream to adjust the body's blood sugar levels. While short-acting insulin produces the maximum effect within 105 minutes (range 60 to 240 minutes), with Exubera the peak insulin levels were achieved at 49 minutes (range 30 to 90 minutes).

Exubera is contraindicated for smokers, and patients with bronchitis, asthma, or emphysema.
