Depression and type 2 diabetes a fatal mix
It is a close connection between lack of exercise and depression. Many studies have shown that lack of physical
activity (exercise) can lead to depression, and conversely that depression can predict the development of a
sedentary lifestyle.
Depression is a common situation among people having type 2 diabetes. This important prevalence can have unfortunate
repercussions. Both minor and major depression among people with diabetes are strongly linked with increased mortality.
Recent studies pointed out that a sedentary lifestyle is an independent and important predictor of mortality from
diabetes. Other studies have concluded that improvements in treating depression in diabetes patients can lead to
the patients exercising more and to better physical functioning.
Depression and type 2 diabetes and can be a fatal mix. Comparing to patients with type 2 diabetes alone, statistics
have shown that patients whose type 2 diabetes was accompanied by major or minor depression had higher mortality
rates.
Researchers added that more work is needed to make clear the cause-and-effect relationships among diabetes complications, depression, behavior and mortality.
